I’m an Adult Services Reference Librarian at the Helen M. Plum Memorial Library. My job involves many hats, but first and foremost, I provide reference service in a suburban public library setting. I also manage the adult downloadable and audiobook collections, specialize in 20s and 30s outreach, and contribute to teen programming, social media, the library website website and staff intranet.

Craft Bar

Glen Ellyn Public Library

I worked full time as the Glen Ellyn Public Library‘s Online Content & Marketing Coordinator from May 2011 through August 2012. The first person hired for this newly-created position, I was responsible for overhauling the library’s brand and marketing approach, as well as GEPL’s website. The new brand and site launched March 1, 2012 at gepl.org.

Film Festivals

I worked for the East Lansing Film Festival for two years. I was an intern with ELFF for their 10th annual festival and worked as the Lake Michigan Film Competition Director for the 11th and 12th annual festivals.

Due to my festival experience with ELFF and as a filmmaker, I was recruited to help co-found the Capital City Film Festival in Lansing, Michigan in 2010.

Hands Occupied

Hands Occupied is a craft blog primarily focused on craft project tutorials with a few product reviews, giveaways, and the occasional, adorable dog picture thrown in. Many of the people who read Hands Occupied are crafters in their 20s and 30s who are in the midst of planning weddings, starting families, or developing their careers. Overall, Hands Occupied fosters a community of people of any age who want to infuse their busy lives with a little DIY.

Misc. Library Work

During the summer of 2011, I interned at the Oak Park (IL) Public Library, working with teen volunteers to develop apps, animations and more to help support the library.

I have a library tattoo and was featured in 8bitlibrary.com’s Project Brand Yourself a Librarian series in November of 2010.

I was the subject of a feature story in Lansing, MI publication in November 2010: Landing in Lansing: Heidi Gustad.

Presentations

May 2010: I did a presentation about public library applications of video technology at the Michigan Library Association’s Tech Escape conference with my colleague, Angela Semifero.

March 2010: I did a presentation for an audience of hundreds at an event called Ignite Lansing. The Library: Not What You Think was later featured on the Geek the Library and LIS News blogs. Check it out:

October 2010: A colleague and I did a presentation at Wayne State University on using new media in special and small libraries. At the time, I was also serving as the SLA@WSU Secretary.
